Quasi-brittle Fracture of Concrete and Ceramics & Problems of “Size Effect Law”

Arguably, Bazant is “generally regarded as the world leader in research on scaling in the mechanics of solids”. His “size effect law” and “universal size effect law” have been untouchable because of Bazant’s world standing in the field. This presentation will show the so-called “Size Effect Law” is seriously flawed by in-depth analysis of two sets of recent experimental results from Bazant’s own group and his student/colleague.
Bazant’s “Size Effect Law” consists of 3 different equations containing 18 empirical parameters to be determined by curve-fitting of experimental results. A simple “Boundary Effect Model” proposed by the speaker only uses two fundamental material properties (tensile strength and fracture toughness) is more useful than “Size Effect Law”, which can be used as a safe design code and as a new test method for both material properties.
