The China-UK seminar on the hydrodynamics of coastal and offshore renewable energy systems in extreme environments was successfully held

August 1, 2019

From July 28th to 31th, 2019, the China-UK seminar on the hydrodynamics of coastal and offshore renewable energy systems in extreme environments which was jointly funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the British Council and the Newton Fund was successfully held in Dalian. Professor Ma Yuxiang from Dalian University of Technology and Dr. Zhihua Xie from Cardiff University are the convener of the seminar. They invited Professor Zheng Jinhai from Hohai University, Professor Lin Pengzhi from Sichuan University, Professor Thorsten Stoesser from University College London and Professor Alison Raby from Plymouth University as the mentor of the seminar. There are more than 50 scholars from 20 universities from both China and Britain participated in the seminar. The seminar included academic reports, scientific paper writing discussions, professional development discussions, Sino-UK cooperation discussions, laboratory visits, etc. The holding of the seminar not only enabled Chinese and British scholars to further understand the opportunities and challenges of renewable energy systems in extreme environments to promote the its development but also facilitate academic exchanges between China and the UK for future leaders in coastal and offshore fields so that lay a solid foundation for further in-depth cooperation.

On the morning of July 29th, Professor Ma Yuxiang from Dalian University of Technology, Dr. Zhihua Xie from Cardiff University, Professor Dong Guohai, Member of the Standing Committee of DUT’s Party Committee, and Mr. Rice Li from the British Council for Cultural and Education respectively delivered opening speeches. Subsequently, Professor Richard Willden from Oxford University gave a report entitled "Tidal Stream Energy – Designing for Performance". The report outlined the scope and utilization of tidal currents in China and the United Kingdom and analyzed the forces and currents of tidal turbine work field. Afterwards, in order to deepen the mutual understanding between Chinese and British scholars, the participants introduced themselves for 3 minutes.

On the afternoon of July 29th, Prof. Zhang Jisheng from Hohai University gave a theme report entitled "Tidal Stream Energy Pilot Project in Zhoushan Water, China". The report introduced the Zhoushan current tidal pilot project in China. Professor Alison Raby from Plymouth University gave a theme report entitled "Extreme Waves and the Structures that Dare to Stand". The report described the impact of extreme waves on the lighthouse from multiple angles. Subsequently, the editor-in-chief of "Applied Ocean Research", "Journal of Hydraulic Engineering-ASCE", "Journal of Hydro-Environment Research", "Journal of Ocean Engineering and Marine Energy", Professor Lin Pengzhi from Sichuan University and the deputy editor-in-chief of "Journal of Hydraulic Engineering-ASCE", "Journal of Hydraulic Engineering-IAHR", "International Journal of Sediment Research", Professor Thorsten Stoesser from University College London provided on-site answers to common questions in scientific writing and submission. Members of the club benefited greatly. Finally, the meeting conducted a round-table discussion to allow young teachers and industry leaders to have more in-depth discussions.
